Aiming High – Short Breaks for Disabled Children

The Government wants disabled children to be a priority, both nationally and locally: a commitment confirmed in the NHS Operating Framework and in the Children's Plan.
Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC), launched in May 2007, is the transformation programme for disabled children's services. Supported by substantial new funding and measures designed to make the system work better, the AHDC programme aims to deliver:

  • Access and empowerment for disabled children and families
  • Responsive services and timely support
  • Improved service quality and capacity

Phab has been working with Authorities around the country to help them fulfil their duty to provide Short Breaks for Disabled Children and their families. We have been involved in consultation events, provider events and have sat on steering groups, according to the needs of each Authority. Each area is different, but the over –arching theme coming through is that children and young people with a disability just want the same opportunities as every other young person.

We can help provide some of those opportunities: Phab runs over 200 clubs around the country, offering all sorts of activities, according to what the members want - it could be IT, drama, art, circus skills, a disco, visit to the cinema, swimming, a trip to a theme park or just chilling out together. We will organise any activity, as long as it accessible to all Phab members. If there is not a Phab club in your area, please contact us to look at whether we could start one together.

Phab also runs a number of challenging residential projects at outdoor activity centres which provide a longer break for families and an amazing experience for the children and young people.
