Heartbeat Hike 2009
Sunday 7th June 2009
Sunday 7th June was the day of our 31st Heartbeat Hike, in London’s Hyde Park and over 600 Phab members from around the country came together to enjoy each others company, and also to raise money through sponsorship by walking, wheeling or pushing around the Serpentine.
The event was started by Phab’s President Ed Stewart and we were honoured that pipers from Shree Muktajeevan Pipe Band were able to play and to start off the procession ahead of the walkers creating a carnival atmosphere that could be enjoyed by everyone in the park.
The fancy dress theme was space - this was in line with celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing in July, and the park was full of various people dressed in space themed costumes.
We were honoured that the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Duncan Sandys attended with Mary-Brown Sandys and their young son Julian. We were also delghted to welcome the Deputy Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Russell Jackson, accompanied by Miss Lydia Buttinger.
The Phab members and public were treated to a magnificent day of non-stop entertainment; this included a marvellous spectacle of music and dance from the members of The Shree Mukjaveen Pipe Band and Dhol Academy. Also wonderful cultural dance from the Shree Muktajeevan Dance Academy. We also were thrilled that John Kelly came with his band Rockinpaddy; other bands included Scallywags and Sundays Child, along with Crazy Bananas clown workshop, and face painting - there really was something for everyone.
Members came from all over the country and we welcomed from the North members from Halton Phab, from the Midlands, members from Wisbech and Towcester and Daventry, from the South West, Exeter, Chippenham, Andover with the remaining coming from across the South East Region.
As usual we had our fancy dress competitions, and we are pleased to announce that the results were:- Best Group - Hounslow, Best Female – Thelma Cozens Wisbech Phab, Best Male – Dominic Lee, Colchester Phab, Best Banner Uckfield Phab.
Alain Paver was our MC for the day, and thanks to the wonderful support from a great many people, it was a perfect day - even the sun shone!
The date for next years event is Sunday 6th June 2010 – so put this date on your planning schedules now, because it is a day for the members that you do not want to miss.
