And here’s a report on last year:
Phab celebrated its annual Heartbeat Hike Hyde Park on Sunday 8th June.
An overwhelming success with nearly1000 members raising funds for their individual clubs by walking, wheeling or pushing around the Serpentine.
This was the 30th Heartbeat Hike since it all began in 1978 when Jimmy Savile said “Everyone’s got a heartbeat even if they can’t walk” and so his idea of the Phab Heartbeat Hike was born. Heartbeat Hikes are Phab in action – people of all abilities enjoying together fun, friendship, and each others company.
The weather for our Heartbeat Hike was perfect. Ed Stewart, President, and Mayoral Representatives from Westminster and Croydon arrived at 11 o’clock to the Sound of Scallywags Jazz Group and were welcomed by Alain Paver from Berkshire Phab, our regular MC resplendent in his “Green theme” outfit and nearly a thousand Phab members and friends.
Ed officially started the event by cutting the ribbon and off went our intrepid Phab members to complete their sponsored circuits of the Serpentine to collect sponsorship for their clubs and their well deserved medals. Numerous clubs competed for the Green theme fancy dress competition and the best banner.
There was further entertainment at the Bandstand provided by Scallywags Jazz Group, Sundays Child, and Epsom & Ewell Phab Club, Crazy Bananas Clown Workshop, and Face Painting. We were also treated to an outstanding routine of songs and dance from “The WestEnd Kids” performed at the bandstand.
Our sincere thanks to Steve Edwards and the Staff of the Royal Parks, Veronica Matthews - The Park Café, Alain Paver, as Master of Ceremonies, Scallywags Jazz Group, WestEnd Kids, Epsom & Ewell Phab Club, Sundays Child, John & Lorna Stephens, Adrian Dorwood, Crazy Bananas Entertainment, Richard Briggs OBE - Liberty Drives and Mary and her team of drivers, Maggie Proctor - St Johns Ambulance, Tina Vipond - Face painter, Sue Paver, and her team for assisting in judging the fancy dress, Neil Burtenshaw and the 1st Caterham (St. Mary’s) Scout Group, Jacky Ames and Unity 70, Mary Schofield and the team from Oxford, Andrew Adams and Diana Lempriere-Knight for manning the checkpoints.
