Phab’s Amazing Marathon Runners
Sunday the 22nd of April 2018 saw the hottest on record for the Virgin London Marathon with temperatures of 24.1C (73.5F).
Our Phabkids runners met at Woolwich Park bandstand, with new runners put at ease by Phabkids Runner Jo Tunley, all arranged through our well supported Phabkids Facebook running group. We had some wonderful volunteer cheering stations along the route, which the runners really appreciated, and there were many colourful Phabkids runners out on the course!
And we were very privileged once again to be able to welcome the runners back to the excellent facilities at The Royal Parks Offices at St James’ Park where they were able to meet their families, have a massage (thank you Dan Scott and his team) and a hot shower. We were just relieved to see everyone back safely!
The most important thing on the day was finishing, “creating smiles and not miles”, and not worrying about personal bests. Even so, we had a visually impaired runner, Khalid Elkhereji, who finished in an astonishing 03:56:26 assisted by two guides. And, in spite of the soaring temperatures, our first male runner past the finishing line was Brian Burke from the USA with an amazing time of 02:53:01, followed by our first female runner, Joelle Hobika also from the USA, with another great time of 03:43:01. And we must make a very special mention to James Walton who completed his 20th marathon for Phabkids!
Anita Dobson, Phab’s President, sent all the runners this special message, “A huge thank you to the incredible Phabkids team for running to support Phab on the hottest London Marathon Day ever! You are all AMAZING and truly Phabulous heroes!”
And we are indeed immensely proud of our VMLM 2018 team. You have all made such a difference – THANK YOU!
